Architects, designers, planners, artists, students and urbanists from all around the globe have been invited by the Institute for Urban Design to develop a design proposal that can act to fill an opportunity that has been raised by those living in New York.
The design competition, "By the City/For the City" has sourced more than half of a thousand different ideas and opportunities, and anyone wishing to enter the design competition has until Friday 15th July to submit any design ideas that they have. From here, ten entries will be selected by a jury including world-renowned architects, urbanists and designers of which the ten chosen entries will receive $500.
This isn't the only reward on offer though, and 'An Atlas of Possibility for the Future of New York City' is a book that is to be published, whereby the majority of entries will be included and not just those selected as the standout top ten. Beyond this, the inaugral Urban Design Week festival will be held from the week beginning 15th September where a public exhibition will showcase the submissions.
Executive Director of the Institute for Urban Design, Anne Guiney, said that the design competition is an attempt to connect worldwide design talent to those who live in New York and know the area so well. "Urban Design Week was conceived as an opportunity to launch a wider public debate about the collaborative process of city-making", she added.
