An eighty-four page publication, there were a total of twenty-three League One issues come the end of the season, as well as three pre-season friendly issues and a smaller, one-off sixteen-page issue for the youth team’s FA Youth Cup tie with Chelsea in December 2012.
The season marked the club's seventy-fifth anniversary, so we were tasked with producing something that had a clean, smart finish, but would also show a transition towards the modern day. We opted for a matte finish to the cover along with perfect-binding for that classy feel. The spine also enabled us to implement a montage across the spine to make it a real collectors' item, and entice fans to buy each issue.
The cover featured two action shots of home players, as well as one of an opposition player. We tended to use one U's player in a home kit alongside one in an away kit, to add a bit of extra colour to the front.
The opposition would receive eight pages dedicated to them, which would adopt the club's colour scheme to make them distinctive.
Elsewhere, however, the programme tried to utilise a lot of white with simple, yet smart, layouts for that classier finish as requested in the received brief. This is illustrated in the match report spreads that would appear in each issue, too.
The different layouts were reserved for the features, such as the 'School Report' or 'We Are United' spreads, with the latter aiming to achieve a scrapbook feel to fill up with the club's community activities.
Each issue would have a six-page feature interview as the centrepiece, which is where we were able to express a little more creativity, particularly for the introductory spread. The remaining four pages of the interview would then fall more in line with the overall style.
Duplexity’s graphic design is always of a high standard and is received in a timely fashion. They have an excellent understanding of what we are looking for when we request artwork and frequently exceeds our expectations when the final product is delivered. They have been very helpful and I would thoroughly recommend them.
